Biography
Larry Sanger is best known as a co-founder of Wikipedia—he conceived the idea for a wiki encyclopedia, named it, led it in its seminal first year, and formulated much of its original policy. He holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from The Ohio State University, with a specialization in epistemology.
He is currently President of the Knowledge Standards Foundation, which stands for rigorous and open standards for online knowledge. Its main project is the Encyclosphere, a decentralized encyclopedia network designed to do for encyclopedias what the blogosphere did for blogs. Since 2025, he has also turned to an extended project to reform Wikipedia.
Sanger’s career in knowledge and education technology spans more than two decades. He created Reading Bear, a systematic phonics program that has helped millions of children learn to read; launched WatchKnowLearn, a directory of teacher-approved educational videos; founded the Citizendium, an expert-guided wiki encyclopedia; developed Infobitt, a collaborative news platform; and served as Chief Information Officer of Everipedia. On his blog, he runs the Seminarium Theologico-Philosophicum, a seminar in the history of the philosophy of religion.
He is a homeschooling parent, a member of the Anglican Church in North America and student of theology, and an Irish fiddle player. He lives in Ohio.
